Black soap (savon noir beldi) is a traditional Moroccan paste made from macerated black olives and olive oil, applied on warm, steamed skin to soften it before the exfoliation step of a hammam ritual.
What it’s made of
Unlike Western soap bars, Moroccan black soap has a paste-like texture and a distinctive earthy scent, made purely from olive-based ingredients without harsh chemicals when produced traditionally.
How it’s used in the ritual
Applied in a generous layer on steamed skin and left for several minutes, it softens dead skin cells, making the subsequent kessa glove exfoliation far more effective. Read more in our hammam products guide.
Choosing a quality product
A good black soap should be 100% natural, without synthetic fragrance or harsh preservatives — a key thing to check when buying one to take home.
